Seeking Wisdom For Every Day Living

Parker News

February 13, 2012

Dear friends of the Parker UMC community,

Yesterday was a great "day in the life" for our community. It's amazing that 36 people in our sanctuary can feel so full when they are lively and involved like you all were yesterday. How cool to have Ralph lead with a poem, Ginny lead with a story she wrote, and Lenda Faye lead us through communion. The music was excellent and I hear soon we will have a choir again, so all new people are welcome to join the group as they gather at Rachelen's home on Wednesday, Feb 29, at 7:30 p.m.

The Sunday School DVD of Marcus Borg sharing the meaningfulness of our "resurrection" experiences was excellent. We'll finish that series on Sunday, Feb. 26 at 10 a.m. Then we'll have an evaluation time of the whole series and then watch a documentary on the women who led a revolution to overthrow the dictator Charles Taylor in Liberia - an inspiring story titled, "Pray the devil back to hell."

Remember that you have earned a break from weekly worship in the Parker sanctuary so we will take our annual hiatus next Sunday (Feb. 19) and invite you to join the worshippers at Rayne UMC (3900 St. Charles Ave.) for a Jazz Sunday service at 10 a.m. before flooding out into the streets for Mardi Gras parades.

Looking ahead, we have 12 people signed up so far to join us for a new class from 6 - 7 p.m. on Wednesdays in Lent sharing with the new book by Sr. Joan Chittister, The Monastery of the HeartWe begin Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Parker UMC. That's just a week away, so please call the church office at 895-1222 to reserve a copy of the book so we can order enough. Cost is $12 and make checks out to Parker UMC.

Plan now to join us in a community-building time on Sunday, Feb. 26 with our United Methodist bishop speaking at  our 11 a.m. service followed by a pot-luck meal at noon and centering prayer group at 2 p.m.

Spirituality in Film Series: The Song of Bernadette (1943) Friday, March 2, 7:30 pm at Parker Methodist Church. This is the story of the miracle at Lourdes and a great film in its own right.

Final Story: "In the Arms" - An 8 year-old girl attended church for the first time yesterday with her mom. Her mom said she wanted her daughter to at least be exposed to some religion. The girl looked up at a stained glass window of our sanctuary and asked me, "Who is that man?" After being in church since I was a child, it never occurs to me that someone could see a picture of Jesus holding a lamb and not know who that is. The worship service was just starting. Without time to think I said, "That is Jesus holding the lamb. Some of us like to think of ourselves as being like lambs who Jesus loves."
A contemplative seeks union with God, living "in the arms". It is our passion. It is our great need, as we do not want to go through life without being "in the arms" of a Presence Greater than ourselves. First we practice the presence of God. Then we bring Presence with us as we serve in the world. And sometimes, usually without warning, we get to voice the essence of our faith experience: "We are in the arms of a Great Love."
As a contemplative community we are on that kind of journey together. We don't have it all figured out. But this we can do: practice  being "in the arms" of the Presence, bring the Presence into service in the world, and if a moment is graced, we might even get to share the presence we experience with words.

Blessings on your own journey toward the Life "in the arms",

William Thiele

Dear friends of Parker UMC,

A Community of Soul began a 6-week journey of sharing what it means to us to watch and listen for the soul in our lives on Wednesday in the parlor at Rayne UMC. We had people from Parker, Rayne, and our School for Contemplative Living, i.e. a wonderful, ecumenical mix for deepening discussion. Join us tonight at 6 p.m. If you could use some inner stillness you could even come at 5:30 p.m. as we gather there for a centering prayer time.

"Luminosity: Part 1" will be our Sunday worship theme at 11 a.m. as we continue to explore what a life of Epiphany can mean for our personal transformation. And if you are a real Christian you can even come jump into the exploration of the 10 a.m. series on Jesus and the Kingdom of God. I hear it continues to be marvelous even when I was away. (Not shocking!)

Two spiritual growth experiences are coming this weekend even before Sunday worship: Following the Light: A Contemplative ArtWalk will be held this Saturday, January 21, between 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at St. James Episcopal church at 6249 Canal Blvd. in Lakeview. Three artists will share their work with background music. And on Friday or Saturday, January 20-21, between 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. you are invited to a community labyrinth walk in the Brent House Conference Center at Ochsner Hospital on Jefferson Hwy. Our own Sherryl Adkins will facilitate this spiritual experience.

Thanks so much for praying for me over the 8 days of silence in Sewanee, TN for a Centering Prayer Intensive retreat offering training in deepening the contemplative life. Dang that was a lot harder than expected in many ways. Tell me more about how great the worship and spiritual growth have been over the past few weeks.
Remember my journey as I remember yours,

Dear Parker people,
Wow you guys! It is Friday night and I am reading some details about our church and other United Methodist churches in the New Orleans area. There are churches of all sizes who have shared in the joint missions of Methodists by paying 100% of their share. You are one of those churches.
There are churches of all sizes who have barely begun to pay their share and others who are still working at it. This is not about them. This is about my amazement at what you all have done. Before all else, I believe we should be contibuting this missions giving - and we have, to the tune of $9064. On top of that you contributed an additional $2525 of other missions giving. You people donated $11,593 in missions giving for 2011, (more than 10% of the total budget). Unbelievable!

This year our little spiritual community has also taken on some massive and unexpected expenses for the building, which Carolyn Clawson just finished tallying: $31,905! These were not budgeted, surely not expected, but paid 100% through your donations, our rental income, and our savings account. When the bills finish coming in we will have another $20,000 in unexpected expenses for replacing the heaters, i.e. two a/c units, two heating units, and a whole new sewage system in one year (not counting multiple other smaller expenses). No church can afford such extreme costs year after year - but thankfully, the whole heating and cooling system only goes out every few decades. So you have provided for this worship and education space for, hopefully, decades to come. I want you to know all this was possible in part because of the wise protecting of our savings for emergencies like these done by Tom Ballantine, Carolyn Clawson, and your Trustees over many years.

Off of money and onto other things like worship and spiritual growth:
Sunday 10 a.m. our wonderful discussion of the Jesus and the Kingdom of God DVD will resume and will be facilitated by Carol Ballantine. Dr. Lourdes Rincon will follow.
Rev. Dr. Cory Sparks will share a message, "Be Loved," and he and Dr. Melissa Sparks will share a poetic meditation this Sunday, January 8, 11 a.m.
Rev. Lenda Faye Matthews will share a message, "What about Tomorrow," on Sunday, January 15, 11 a.m. (You might remember her excellent poem shared in November, and now she will lead us on Human relations Day).
It seems like only a goober would miss these wonderful opportunities to worship and grow.
Two ladies drove all the way from Bush to be part of it. Join us this week at 6 p.m. as Dr. Phyllis Raabe, sociology professor, and Mrs. Stacy Hall facilitate the discussion. If you could use some inner stillness you could even come at 5:30 p.m. as Merry Toups facilitates a centering prayer time.
Finally, pray for me as I launch into 8 days of silence in Sewanee, TN for a Centering Prayer Intensive retreat offering training in deepening the contemplative life. We will drive early Sunday morning, Jan. 8 and return late January 15. I will be "off-line for those 8 days. But when I return you can tell me how great the worship and spiritual growth have been.
Remember me as I remember you,
